What is Philadelphia Youth Basketball?

PYB, or Philadelphia Youth Basketball, isn't just about the game on the court. It's a community-driven organization dedicated to nurturing young talent both athletically and academically. My involvement stems from a family legacy deeply rooted in basketball. How did I get involved? With my dad coaching at Sonny Hill League and my cousin's career as a college basketball coach, the sport runs in my blood. But beyond the court, I found purpose in helping these young athletes excel not only in basketball but also in their education and personal growth. Growing up my dad brought his players who needed academic support to our home where I would tutor them to get their grades up. I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of mentorship and support. That's why PYB's mission resonates with me—it's about more than just basketball; it's about shaping futures.

What is my role?

I am a member of PYB's Next Gen Committee, I serve as an ambassador for the organization's mission, leveraging my skills and connections to support its initiatives. This entails active participation in volunteer events and fundraising efforts, for example, I ran the Philly Half Marathon where I raised over $800 for PYB. Additionally, I utilize my professional network and personal experiences to contribute to PYB's programs. There are great opportunities within PYB to contribute your skills including the HoopHers girls empowerment program. I'm excited to be part of "A Woman's Word" guest speaking series, where I hope to empower young girls to pursue their dreams.

Being involved with PYB not only allows me to give back to the community but also provides personal growth opportunities. Through networking events and meetings, both virtual and in-person, I've connected with inspiring individuals and expanded my professional circle. PYB's annual Gala adds a touch of excitement to our efforts, open to the public and filled with meaningful moments.

Moreover, as PYB evolves, so does our Next Gen Committee. We've recently established Subcommittees, offering new avenues for involvement and impact. The future looks promising, and I'm eager to continue contributing to PYB's mission and making a difference in the lives of young athletes.

PYB SubCommittees

As a member and chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Subcommittee within PYB's NextGen Committee, I've embarked on a rewarding learning journey. This experience pushes me beyond my comfort zone, fostering personal and professional growth as I engage in research and collaboration. Joining a subcommittee is optional, but DE&I is a cause close to my heart, and I'm passionate about contributing to its progress. Working alongside dedicated individuals like Julia Green and Nahijee Cross, we're committed to developing and implementing policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within our committee and the broader organization. Through setting and tracking demographic goals and providing resources for member advancement, we aim to create a more inclusive environment for all. This opportunity not only allows me to make a difference but also enriches my journey with PYB, reinforcing my commitment to driving positive change.

In case you are interested the other two Subcommittees are:

Development and Events Subcommittee: Oversees the planning and execution of events, fundraisers, and community engagement initiatives. Strategizes to secure support from sponsors, partners, and donors to drive committee initiatives forward. Manages all logistics, budgets, and marketing efforts related to committee events and activities.

Program and Professional Development Subcommittee: Facilitates the design and delivery of workshops, training sessions, and professional development opportunities tailored for Next Gen members. Provides access to compelling speakers from the PYB staff team, board, and broader networks, enhancing the learning experience.

Even if you can't commit to PYB's Next Gen Committee, there are numerous ways to support the organization:

  • Donate financially.

  • Become a coach or mentor.

  • -Attend as a guest speaker.

  • Volunteer at our events and programs.

Exciting news: PYB is opening a new "Sixth Man" Center in just two months!

Once a factory in Philadelphia's Hunting Park neighborhood, it will soon be a 100,000-square-foot youth and community empowerment center. The center will feature 6 indoor basketball courts, classrooms for financial literacy and early childhood development programs, and an 80-seat dialogue arena for events like "teen summit."
